- Update on European air traffic

Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano continues to erupt, but the ash cloud has had a very limited impact on TNT's air operations so far. TNT operated all flights yesterday with minimal delays caused by the impacted areas.
As at 10.00 CET on 10 May 2010, Eurocontrol, the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation, expected approximately 28,500 flights within the European area, about 500 below average for a Monday at this time of year.
According to the forecasts, areas of higher ash concentration could move during the afternoon in a north-easterly direction from the Atlantic into the Iberian Peninsula and some parts of France. TNT is monitoring the situation by the hour and stands ready to activate contingency plans to offset the effect of any flight ban.

TNT returned to a full flight schedule to, from and within Europe earlier this week, as the disruptions caused by volcanic ash clouds over Europe abated. TNT’s extensive road service and the implementation of contingency plans allowed it to minimise delivery delays in Europe. Economy Express shipments within Europe continued to move through TNT’s normal road network routes in 39 countries and were not affected. All operations are now back to normal and we thank our customers for their patience during the disruption.

TNT has returned to a near-full flight schedule, following the disruptions caused by volcanic ash clouds over Europe. Earlier this week, TNT resumed flights to and from Hong Kong, Shanghai, and New York JFK. The company also resumed all international and domestic flights in Europe, except to and from some closed Scandinavian airports. TNT is transporting these affected shipments via separate road linehauls to minimise delays.

For shipments using TNT’s express air services, the company set up separate road line-hauls (using trucks and vans) through its air hub in Liege to expedite Express shipments. - TNT resumes intercontinental flights

TNT yesterday resumed flights to and from Hong Kong, Shanghai, and New York JFK. TNT also resumed international and domestic flights in Europe. The company operated more than 90 flights over the last 24 hours and 22 aircraft connected last night through its air hub in Liege, Belgium.
TNT is hoping to return to a normal schedule by the end of this week, pending remaining air traffic restrictions over some parts of north-western Europe, including Finland, Denmark, Ireland, and Sweden. TNT will continue to truck air shipments to and from European destinations that cannot yet be reached by plane.

- TNT resumes flights in Europe

TNT Express has resumed flights within Europe, in particular from Southern Europe to the company’s main air hub in Liege, Belgium. But it remains unclear how much airspace will reopen, and at what pace.
The company’s two B747-400ERF aircraft bound for Shanghai (with a stopover in Singapore) and Hong Kong are ready to take off from Liege and Frankfurt, respectively, subject to the civil aviation authorities’ permission. The B767 aircraft loaded with shipments from the US landed today in Liege.
TNT will pursue its plan to resume flights, in the light of the latest reports. Should restrictions hinder air traffic, we will continue to move shipments within Europe by road, so as to limit the impact for customers.
Thanks to TNT’s outstanding road service and contingency plans put in place on 15 April 2010, there are little to no backlogs in TNT’s facilities in Europe. TNT is doing its utmost to secure commercial uplift from Asia to Europe, until it can again operate its scheduled B747 freighter service between the two continents.

- Volcanic ash disrupts air traffic over Europe

European air-safety authorities yesterday agreed to relax flight bans caused by a cloud of volcanic ash. EU transport ministers proposed to divide EU airspace into three zones based on ash concentrations in the atmosphere: a no-fly area, a limited-service zone and an open-skies area. Some airlines have resumed a limited number of passenger flights, but it remains unclear how much airspace will reopen and for how long.
TNT hopes to resume flights in and out of Liege this evening. Last night we flew some aircraft in Southern Europe to move shipments from Cyprus and Greece to Italy. TNT continued to truck other air freight to/from Liege, like in the previous evenings.
The company’s two B747-400ERF aircraft bound for Shanghai (with a stopover in Singapore) and Hong Kong are still in Liege and Frankfurt, respectively. They will depart for Asia as soon as possible, subject to Belgian Civil Aviation Authorities’ permission. The B767 aircraft loaded with exports for the US has been cleared to fly from Keflavik International Airport, Iceland, to Liege. Once in Liege, it will be loaded and will take off as soon as the flight plan is cleared.
TNT will today review its plan to resume flights, in the light of the latest reports.
Our planes and crews are ready to fly as we are permitted to do so. Should restrictions hinder air traffic, we will continue to move shipments within Europe by road, so as to limit the impact for customers as much as possible.

Economy Express shipments within Europe will continue to move through TNT’s normal road network routes in 39 countries and are NOT affected by the current situation.
For shipments using TNT’s Express air services, our operations have set up separate road line-hauls (using trucks and vans) through our air hub in Liege to expedite Express shipments.

- Volcanic ash disrupts air traffic over North-West Europe

The airspace above large parts of Europe is still closed to commercial air traffic. Test flights over the weekend showed promising results, but it is expected that restrictions on air traffic, in effect since 15 April, will continue until at least tomorrow morning.
TNT has rolled out contingency plans for air consignments, so as to limit the impact for customers as much as possible.
TNT Express has the most extensive road network in Europe, whereby we are able to offer an alternative via road transport to a large number of European destinations. The network covers 39 European countries.
Transport via our road network is NOT affected by the current situation. The expected impact on affected shipments will therefore be substantially smaller.
Customers with time critical shipments are advised to use TNT’s Special Services solutions. Customer service teams and account managers are available to answer questions.
Our planes and crews are ready to fly as soon as the skies open. Should the restriction on air traffic remain in place, we will continue to move shipments within Europe by road.

The Belgian airspace has been closed since Thursday 15 April, 4:30 pm CET. TNT’s air hub in Liege remains open to process all shipments arriving and leaving by road.
TNT’s B747-400 ERF bound for Singapore and Shanghai is ready to depart from Liege, subject to governmental and air traffic control regulations. The same goes for TNT’s B747-400 ERF bound for Hong Kong, which will fly directly from Frankfurt.

- Vrouwen in topfuncties
TNT streeft naar gelijke kansen voor alle medewerkers van de onderneming, zonder discriminatie op welke grond dan ook. Wij zien dit niet alleen als onze morele en wettelijke plicht, maar zijn ervan overtuigd dat juist de verschillen tussen mensen onze creativiteit bevorderen en dus uiteindelijk ook goed zijn voor onze resultaten. In dit verband is TNT zich ook bewust van de specifieke uitdagingen waar vrouwen mee te maken krijgen als ze een hoge managementfunctie ambiëren. Wij hebben daarom speciale maatregelen getroffen om veelbelovende vrouwelijke medewerkers in beeld te brengen en ze te helpen hun ambities waar te maken. TNT staat echter terughoudend ten opzichte van quota’s voor vrouwen in het bedrijfsleven. Met een effectief plaatselijk diversiteitsbeleid kan wellicht meer worden bereikt.
Doorbreken van het glazen plafond
Idealiter zouden topfuncties open moeten staan voor iedereen die er geschikt voor is, ongeacht geslacht of andere persoonlijke factoren. Dat betekent dat vrouwen evenredig vertegenwoordigd zouden moeten zijn in het management van een onderneming. In de praktijk gebeurt dat echter vrijwel nooit vanzelf, maar alleen als de onderneming daar bewust aan werkt bij het in dienst nemen en bevorderen van medewerkers.
In veel westerse landen is de balans tussen werk en privé de klassieke hindernis voor vrouwen die carrière willen maken. Werkende vrouwen besteden gemiddeld veel meer tijd aan de verzorging van kinderen en huishoudelijke taken dan werkende mannen. De langere werktijden en de zakenreizen die hogere functies met zich meebrengen, leggen een groot beslag op de toch al schaarse tijd van vrouwen. Daarnaast zijn er ook minder opvallende, vaak moeilijk te benoemen en op het eerste gezicht volkomen sekseneutrale gewoonten in de dagelijkse werkpraktijk die vrouwen hinderen in hun carrière, zoals het houden van last-minute overleg aan het einde van de werkdag.
Hoewel vrouwen in het bedrijfsleven vooruitgang hebben geboekt, bekleden ze vooralsnog maar 15% van de bestuursfuncties bij de bedrijven in de Fortune 500 (Jaarverslag ION 2009, Planning for Tomorrow’s Boardroom: Making Room for More Women, maart 2009), waarvan 12% überhaupt geen vrouwelijke directieleden heeft. In 2008 was 12,1% van de senior managers van de 100 grootste ondernemingen aan de London Stock Exchange vrouw. Ook qua salariëring blijven de verschillen groot. Zo ontdekte de burgemeester van Londen in 2008 dat de 10% best betaalde mannelijke werknemers in het Verenigd Koninkrijk – meestal in de financiële sector – gemiddeld 32% meer verdienen dan de 10% best betaalde vrouwen (Greater London Authority, Women in London Report 2009, maart 2009).
Vrouwen bij TNT
Ruim een derde (38%) van alle TNT-medewerkers is vrouw, en vrouwen bekleden 26% van de managementfuncties bij TNT.De Raad van Bestuur van TNT heeft vier leden, onder wie één vrouw. De Raad van Commissarissen heeft twee vrouwelijke leden op een totaal van negen. Onder de 113 Nederlandse ondernemingen die zijn genoteerd aan Euronext Amsterdam komt TNT op de derde plaats wat betreft de vertegenwoordiging van vrouwen op bestuursniveau, zo blijkt uit gegevens van de Nederlandse “Female Board Index 2008” (Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam, juni 2008). Bij TNT worden op alle niveaus mannen en vrouwen met dezelfde functie en ervaring gelijk beloond.
Bewuste inspanning
TNT is zich bewust van de specifieke uitdagingen waar vrouwen die een leidinggevende functie ambiëren voor staan, en probeert hen te helpen zich optimaal te ontwikkelen en hun ambities waar te maken. TNT houdt gegevens bij over het aandeel van vrouwen onder haar 1000 topmanagers (momenteel circa 20%) om de voortgang te kunnen meten en beleid voor de toekomst te ontwikkelen.
TNT gelooft echter niet in uniforme standaardoplossingen of targets, zoals quota’s, om vrouwen aan topfuncties te helpen. Dat is immers geen realistische aanpak voor een internationale onderneming die in 64 landen actief is. De werkcultuur verschilt van land tot land, en dat geldt ook voor de manier waarop men tegen man/vrouwkwesties aan kijkt. Wie die opvattingen wil veranderen, kan dat het beste op individueel niveau doen. Als we meer vrouwen in topposities willen zien, kunnen we met plaatselijk diversiteitsmanagement wellicht meer bereiken dan met algemene quota’s. Zo kunnen we stap voor stap toch voor grote veranderingen zorgen.
In het kader van haar mentoringprogramma probeert TNT sinds 2007 meer veelbelovende vrouwelijke medewerkers te koppelen aan een coach. Daarnaast ondersteunen we TNT Link, het medewerkersnetwerk dat inmiddels al meer dan duizend leden heeft en vrouwelijke medewerkers helpt zich te ontwikkelen via netwerken en leer- en mentoringprograma’s. Het mentoringprogramma van Link is gericht op de ondersteuning van vrouwelijke high-potentials. De deelnemers kunnen profiteren van de ervaring van senior managers – vrouwen, maar ook mannen – die op hun beurt meer inzicht krijgen in de problemen waar vrouwen in hun loopbaan mee kampen. Verder organiseert TNT Link bijeenkomsten rond het thema vrouwelijk leiderschap en het bedrijfsleven. Een voorbeeld is de workshop “Women do Mean Business”, die in 2008 met veel succes werd aangeboden in samenwerking met de non-profitorganisatie International Women of Excellence. Een van de sprekers tijdens die workshop was Marie Christine Lombard, TNT Group Managing Director Express.
Daarnaast heeft TNT een aantal specifieke HR-maatregelen genomen om vrouwen te helpen in hun carrière:
- Bewustwording van managers ten aanzien van de manier waarop ze omgaan met vrouwelijke medewerkers
- De mogelijkheid om parttime te werken
- Persoonlijke begeleiding voor veelbelovende medewerkers
- Korte woon-werkafstand, om de balans tussen werk en privé te bevorderen
- Inzet van nieuwe technologie (video, teleconferencing etc.) om het aantal zakenreizen terug te dringen
